Rich Horton's Market Summaries: 2004 Overview of Alternatively Distributed Electronic Publications:The most common way of "publishing" a magazine electronically is to post it on the web. I have already reviewed a number of such sites. There are other ways to publish electronically. E-books are one example -- put out a file in a format readable by an e-book reader. I have already covered one magazine that just this year converted to electronic distribution through Fictionwise -- Challenging Destiny. (It should be noted that many of the major magazines are available as e-books through Fictionwise -- each of Analog, Asimov's, and F&SF, I believe -- but this is in ADDITION to the print version. I cover here magazines available only electronically.) Oceans of the Mind is another example of a magazine distributed in .pdf format (and possibly other formats). Thus, very much like Challenging Destiny, except Oceans of the Mind does not work through Fictionwise (and Oceans of the Mind's .pdfs are printable). And a new magazine available as an e-book, through Electric Story, Fictionwise, and other places, is Aeon. Finally, I saw one magazine this year distributed on CD, which I would say qualifies as electronic distribution. This is Fundamentally Challenged. I will be covering what I saw of each of these magazines in the next few posts. (With a note that I have already covered Challenging Destiny.) ADDENDUM:I forgot Infinite Matrix here, which has published quite a lot of fiction in the past. Only two stories this year, but quite possibly they will be back up to speed next year. |
