* Travel Grant Applications

Applications are invited for the 2006 SLF Travel Research
Grant until the 30th September 2006.
SLF travel grants are awarded to assist writers (fiction,
poetry, drama, creative non-fiction) in their research.
They are not currently available for academic research,
though we hope to offer such funds in the future. We are
currently offering one $600 travel grant annually, to be
used to cover airfare, lodging, and/or other travel
expenses.
Our travel grants will be awarded by a committee of SLF
staff members on the basis of interest and merit. Factors
considered will include:
* a one-page written description of the project in
question, including details on the travel location and an
estimated completion date (no more than 500 words)
* a writing sample in the proposed genre (up to 10 pages
of poetry, 10 pages of drama, or 5000 words of fiction or
creative nonfiction)
* a bibliography of previously-publis hed work by the
author (no more than one page, typed); applicants need
not have previous publications to apply.
If awarded the grant, the recipient agrees to write a
brief report of their research experience (500-1000
words) for our files, and for possible public
dissemination on our website.
PLEASE NOTE: This grant, as with all SLF grants, is
intended to help writers working with speculative
literature. If you're not sure what areas that term
encompasses, we recommend referencing our FAQ (question
#2).
Travel Grant Application Procedures
1. Send the three items listed above to our travel grant
administrators, Colin Harvey and Tiffany Jonas, as
attached .doc files, to travel@speculativeliterature.org.
Include a brief cover letter with your name and contact
info (e-mail, phone in case of emergency). If you have
questions, direct them to that same addre ss.
2. You may apply for travel to take place at any point in
the following year (from September to the following
September).
3. Travel may take place from any country to any country,
or internally within a country; the grants are
unrestricted. Funds will be disbursed in U.S. currency
(but can be sent through PayPal if that is more
convenient for international recipients).
4. Travel grant applications will be considered from July
1st to September 30th, annually. Applications received
outside that period will be discarded unread.
5. The grant recipient will be announced by October 15th,
annually. All applicants will be notified of the status
of their application by that date.

* SLF Mentorship Program

The Speculative Literature Foundation is launching a pilot mentorship program for beginning writers. These writers will be able to gather valuable advice from more experienced writers regarding the craft and business of writing.

Structure

Each mentor will receive five mentees. The mentors will offer advice and answer craft/business questions (both from a SLF facilitator and from the writers themselves). Please note: this is not a workshop, and mentors will not read or comment on individual writing from their mentees.

Applicants may indicate a preference for a particular mentor, but we cannot guarantee that you will be matched with that mentor. Once matched, you will be added to a mailing list with your mentor and the other mentees in your group. Conversations on that mailing list are to be kept private and confidential. At the end of the program, participants are required to write a one-page evaluation of the program, and a brief evaluation of their mentor.

The first group of 20 mentees for the Spring 2006 Pilot Program (March 15-June 15)has been chosen and will be mentored by Jay Lake, Beth Adele Long and Jennifer Pelland.
In response to Hurricane Katrina, the PEN Writers Fund has earmarked an initial $15,000 to assist professional writers (published or produced), translators, editors, or literary agents who have lost all or part of their homes and livelihoods in the floods that have devastated the region. Please follow the link online to a shortened application form. Approval time for grants of up to $500 has been shortened to a few days.

* Travel Grant Winner:

The Speculative Literature Foundation is delighted to announce
that its second annual Travel Grant has been awarded to
Christopher Barzak. The $600 grant will be used to help
Christopher research cultures and settings in southern Japan for
a novel with magical realism and contemporary fantasy elements.
The travel will be to the cities of Kyoto and Nara in Japan.
Christopher's novel will feature a set of interconnected stories
set in Japan and characters of both Japanese and foreign
nationalities. "The [stories] draw on Japanese folklore and fairy
tales, as well as Japanese superstition and ghost stories," the
author explained.

The Speculative Literature Foundation's travel grant jurors were
again an international team comprised of Tiffany Jonas in the
United States and Colin Harvey in the United Kingdom. "The
quality of the applications was again excellent, and we
especially appreciated the diversity; we received proposals for
works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and a screenplay," said
Tiffany, founder and editorial director of Aio Publishing
Company, LLC. "Christopher's work was particularly lyrical. His
writing sample was fraught with humanity, singing with hopeful,
tenuous emotion. His description of the project and its
speculative elements certainly piqued our interest." "Chris
Barzak's application was supported by a fine piece of fiction,"
said Colin, a novelist and critic in the speculative fiction
genre, "that with its cool, limpid prose, shone like a gem,
presenting a different facet on each reading." Christopher has
published short fiction in publications such as Strange Horizons,
Realms of Fantasy, Ideomancer, The Third Alternative, and Lady
Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet in addition to poetry published in
Icon and The Penguin Review. His work has also appeared in
anthologies: his short story "Plenty" appeared in The Year's Best
Fantasy and Horror (Vol. 15) and his story Dead Boy Found
appeared both in Small Beer Press' anthology Trampoline and
Carroll & Graf's The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror (vol. 15).
Wheatland Press, Viking, and Haworth Press will publish more of
his short fiction in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively.

Christopher's project was chosen from among thirty applications.

Further details of SLF's Travel Grant program can be found at:
Applications for next year's Travel Grant will open on July 1st,
SPECULATIVE LITERATURE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES OLDER
WRITERS GRANT WINNER

The Speculative Literature Foundation (SLF) is
delighted to announce that its first annual Older
Writers Grant is to be awarded to Andrea Hairston. The
$750 grant will be used to help Ms. Hairston in her
professional writing career. Honorable Mentions
included Huey Alcaro, Kathleen Camp, Robin
Courtwright, Bruce Golden, and Elaine Sutherland.
These writers will receive a one-year free membership
to the Speculative Literature Foundation, which offers
many helpful resources for speculative fiction
writers.

The award is intended to assist writers of fifty years
or older who are just starting to work at a
professional level. The award was chosen by a jury
consisting of M.J. Goodner, Sandra Kasturi, and Sheree
Thomas of the SLF on the basis of interest and
merit. Award Administrator Sandra noted they received
over 7 0 applications. Sandra said "What made the
winner stand out was good writing, good
characterization, an interesting idea, and a lack of
cliches. [Ms. Hairston] sent a novel excerpt, and I
wanted to see how everything turned out. I wanted to
keep reading, and was disappointed that I only had a
short excerpt! To me, that's the mark of a really
good book."

This year's Older Writers Grant is generously
sponsored in its entirety by Centric Advertising:

Fountain Award Jurors Announced
New Role for SLF as Fiscal Sponsor
Website Additions
______________________________________________________________

* Fountain Award Jurors:

SLF Awards Coordinator Karen Meisner announces that this
year's Fountain Award jurors are Matt Cheney, Gavin Grant,
Patricia McKillip, Vandana Singh, and Alison Smith. They
are already busy reading submissions.

* SLF as Fiscal Sponsor:

New organizations face serious obstacles when seeking the funding
necessary to continue and complete their work. Often they are
hindered by the absence of legal status for the project, as most
foundations and corporate funders restrict grantmaking to fully
tax-exempt organizations. Similarly, potential individual donors
often need the tax incentive of a charitable contribution before
they will support an arts project. The SLF offers fiscal
sponsorship -- a mechanism widely used by the nonprofit sector --
to help overcome these obstacles.

The SLF takes applications to serve as a fiscal sponsor for
genre-related non-profit projects (organizational or individual)
which lack 501(c)3 status. This enables such groups/individuals
to apply for grants for which they might otherwise not be
eligible, such as funds from 501(c)3 non-profit groups hosting
local conventions, who are legally required to redistribute their
profits to other non-profits.

There is no fee to apply, and currently no contracting fee. Any
funds you or your group receives would be directed to the SLF; we
would then take 3% as payment for our administrative costs (7% -
15% is standard in the non-profit world), and redirect the rest
of the funds to you.

Projects that are fiscally sponsored by the SLF are considered
independent contractors and they retain their own identity and
are not part of the SLF. In this way, they retain creative
control and ownership of their project. However, the project is
also responsible for tax reporting and liability issues to the
SLF (which is legally responsible to the government for the
disbursement of grant funds).

The SLF currently serves as a fiscal sponsor for:

* Tea and Ink -- a proposed Asian-focused speculative fiction
anthology

Further applications for fiscal sponsorship should be directed to
Mary Anne Mohanraj, SLF Director.
SPECULATIVE LITERATURE FOUNDATION ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR
FOUNTAIN AWARD

The Speculative Literature Foundation is accepting
nominations for the second annual Fountain Award, with a
prize of $1000 given to a short story of exceptional
literary quality. The Fountain Award will be judged by a
select jury, and chosen from work nominated by magazine and
anthology editors. Non-genre publications are encouraged to
nominate material. Each publication may nominate up to
three stories for inclusion, from work published in the
previous calendar year (2004); nominations must be received
by February 1st, 2005. The winner will be announced in mid-
May of 2005.

The award is intended for short fiction; any story
submitted should contain some form of speculative element.
Possible genres include (but are not limited to): magical
realism, slipstream, science fiction, fantasy, fable,
modern folk and fairy tales, cyberpunk, ghost stories,
alternate history, interstitial, etc. If an editor is not
certain whether a particular piece will qualify, they
should feel free to submit it in any case; the
determination of whether it is appropriate will be decided
by that year's jury.

* First SLF Travel Grant Winner:

The Speculative Literature Foundation (SLF) is
delighted to announce that its first annual Travel
Grant has been awarded to Nora Jemison. The $600
grant will be used to help Nora research Native
American cultures as they existed pre-colonization for
a fantasy novel and series of short stories. The
travel will be to the Navajo National Monument in
Arizona and to Monument Valley in Utah. Ms. Jemison
has published science fiction and fantasy short
stories in Flashshot, Eternally Erotic (eBook
anthology), Ideomancer (forthcoming), and Dark Sins
and Desires Unveiled (anthology; forthcoming).

Ms. Jemison said: "Over the past few years I have had
a strong interest in blending 'high fantasy' tropes
with non-European cultures, characters, and themes. I
would like to explore the concept that ancient Egypt
and/or Nubia may have had contact with the Americas
lon g before European discovery. My hope is to explore
the universal impact of colonization, through the lens
of a fantasy Egyptian and fantasy pre-Columbian native
South American society."

SLF's Award Coordinators were an international team
comprising Tiffany Jonas in the USA and Colin Harvey
in the UK. Tiffany said: "While we received several
excellent applications, Nora Jemison's story sample
was the standout. With a cultural and culinary
emphasis reminiscent of Joanne Harris (Chocolat, Five
Quarters of an Orange), the characters jump off the
page, and the reader can nearly taste the garlic and
onion, the seared meat, and the pappardelle. Nora's
synopsis of the novel she intends to write using
research partially funded by the travel grant is
intriguing and unique."

Further details of SLF's Travel Grant program can be
found at:
http://www.speculativeliterature.org/Awards/SLFTravelGrant.php.

Applications for next year's Travel Grant will open on
July 1st, 2005.

* New SLF Homepage:

It was decided this month that our website had become
complex enough that a sitemap would display its
contents more clearly and facilitate navigation
between areas. Working from an outline provided by
Director Mohanraj (with considerable tweaking and
critiquing by other staff) our incomparable webmasters
Greg Banks and Kaolin Fire have created a super new
SLF homepage. Check it out and let us know what you
think.

* Small Press Co-op at World Fantasy Convention:

We had modest returns at this convention, selling about $300 in texts and a few new memberships in the SLF. The texts that did best were those whose authors were present at the convention (doing readings or panels), or those with particularly attractive covers. Quite a few people did stop by and ask about the co-operative, and some new presses said they planned on joining. Overall, I'd say it was a quiet but generally productive convention for us, and we plan to attend again next year.

--Mary Anne Mohanraj

* Website Additions/Call for Volunteers:

In order to continue to update and expand the content of the SLF's website, we need a committed staff of volunteers to search the web for related sites and recruit new web content. If interested, please email webcoord@speculativeliterature.org. Thanks!

Seton Hill University's unique Master of Arts in Writing Popular
Fiction teaches students to write marketable novels in popular
genres like mystery, romance, science fiction, horror, and
fantasy. Additional specialties include literature for children
and adolescents, and cross-genre blends like romantic suspense or
young adult mysteries. Students attend two week-long, on-campus
residencies each year to master the core elements of fiction
writing and effective marketing and to gain inspiration from
faculty mentors and special guests, all published authors in
genre fiction. Established authors mentor students one-on-one as
they work toward completing a market-ready manuscript from home.
Readings, classes, and on-line discussion about the history,
trends, and techniques of genre fiction add depth to the
student's experience.
*New Staff Introduction:
Hi all, my name is Dawn Burnell. I joined SLF after hearing many wonderful things about it from Mary Anne. And 'cause I'm a sucker when it comes to a good cause. I'll be working in the development group and learning how to write grants to ask kind people for money. Looking forward to finding the funding for supporting the many valuable efforts of the SLF.

*Staff Member Wins Award:

Hearty congratulations to staff member Jay Lake, one of our Forum moderators, who has won the 2004 Campbell New Writer Award!

*Call for Volunteers from Webcontent Coordinator Shannan Palma:
We are currently looking for additional volunteers for the Web Content Committee. Please email me webcoord@speculativeliterature.org, if you'd like to volunteer!

SLF Technology Exchange Program
http://www.speculativeliterature.org/Awards/TechnologyExchange.php

The SLF technology exchange is a new program intended to allow generous donors who have some extra tech to spare (in the form of laptops, printers, and cameras), to donate it to science fiction and fantasy writers who would appreciate having said spare items. Your old computer might be used to write a Hugo-winning novel; your old camera might be used to take research photos to lend a rich sense of place to a fabulous short
story. And by donating through the SLF (an IRS 501(c)3 nonprofit), you get to claim your donation as a tax-deductible item!

Recipients are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. Flexibility in preferred brands and specifications will naturally lead to a faster match.

Simple forms on our website allow you to indicate your interest as either a donor or recipient. We will notify you as soon as we find a match. The SLF promises to keep your information confidential; donor and recipient names will not be publicized in any way on our site. The SLF is only responsible for matching up compatible interests; we will not be taking physical possession of any of the equipment, and we will be in no way held responsible for the state of the hardware/software.

Thank you for your interest and participation in the SLF Technology Exchange Program!

Our Technology Exchange Coordinator is Carmela Diosana.
* Fountain Award Winner Alison Smith:

"I've always been fascinated by tuberculosis. It's a rather disgusting and highly contagious disease. Nonetheless, in the fiction of the nineteenth century, people are always rushing about kissing tubercular young ladies. So I thought, if we can make TB sexy, then we ought to be able to make just about any illness compelling. Yet sickness languishes on the back shelves of great literary topics. And our ideas about it remain undeveloped. There are the romantic consumptives, the noble cancer patients, and then there are neat deaths. I started kicking around the idea of chronic illness as a subject for a story in 1994. I wanted to write about the isolation of chronic illness, the unnamable quality of it, about how it quietly alters the trajectory of a life. Then I came across a gynecological study that reported ten percent of females experience unexplained pelvic pain. And no one talks about it. Soon Alice arrived in my mind, with a constant ache in her nether regions.

"It took eight years to write "The Specialist." When I got up to the part where the Fourth Man's wife is on a dogsled in the Yukon leading the search party for her husband I stalled out. I had written myself into a corner, a cold snowy, sparsely populated corner. So I set the story aside (for good, I thought) and wrote my first book, a memoir titled Name All the Animals. I finished it while in residence at The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in May of 2002. I met a writer there named Laurie Foos. Her first novel, Ex Utero, is about a woman who loses her uterus at the mall. It's a thrilling ride of a book and Laurie delivers it in spare, deadpan prose. Reading Ex Utero gave me courage. I pulled out "The Specialist." I finished the story that week.

"I was certain that no one would ever publish the piece. A dark quest story about a woman and her troubled vagina? No editor was going to go near that. But I was wrong. The lovely editors at McSweeney's picked it up right away. And then it was optioned for film. And then the kind judges at the Speculative Fiction Foundation have blessed it with the very first Fountain Award. I am stunned by the spectrum of people who can relate to Alice's story. And I am quite honored to accept the Fountain Award, on Alice's behalf."
*Website Additions from Shannan Palma:

There was no June update as I moved and got settled in
a new city, but the combined June/July update begins
our new focus on building up specific areas of the
site, while continuing general updates. Our summer
focus has been our formerly meager convention
listings, and I'm happy to report that they are
growing fast. In addition to several new cons, we now
have links to several independently maintained
regional con listings, and updated dates and locations
for the individual cons already posted. Our August
focus is the Editor pages. Do you know of a site you
think would fit? An essay you think might help others?
You don't have to be a member of the committee to
submit a link! Please email suggestions to:
webcoord@speculativeliterature.org.
